There were three cases in different banks in the last nine years In the first case, a resident of Wanavdi lost gold ornaments worth Rs. ll lakh. In the second case, gold ornaments worth Rs3 lakh were stolen. The third case saw a relationship manager; with a bank losing her valuables
The Pune police have recorded three incidents of theft from safe deposit lockers of different banks in the last nine years.
The details were obtained by social activist Vihar Durve under the Right To Information Act, 2005 from the police.
Durve told DNA, "After coming across a few cases of valuables of bank customers going missing from safe deposit lockers, I filed an RTI application with the city police to find out the status."
According to the city police, Wanavdi resident Ismail Ibrahim Kiranawa] a lost gold ornaments worth Rsll.08 lakh from his locker at Pune District Central Cooperative Bank. The ornaments were placed in the locker in May 2005 and were stolen sometime between August 18, 2007 and August 9, 2008.
In another case, Shubhangi Kale, who registered a complaint with Swargate police against Saraswat Bank authorities in Bibvewadi, lost gold ornaments worth over Rs3.46 lakh from her locker at the bank, sometime be-ween October 15, 2006 and November 3,2006.
In the third incident, Sunita Kulkarni, a relationship manager with the Bank of India lost her valuables kept in the locker with the Bank of India, Navi Peth branch locker between October 3, 2009 and October 6,2009.
Durve said, "Customers keep their valuables in bank lockers. If the valuables disappear, then why should bank lockers be hired?"
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) draft circular on safe de posit lockers dated April 17, 2007 contains guidelines on security aspects relating to safe deposit lockers. According to these guide-lines, the bank should exercise due care and precaution for protection of lockers provided to customers. Banks should also review the systems in force for operation of safe deposit vaults or lockers at their branches on an on-going basis and take necessary steps.
It also mentions that the security procedures should be well-documented and the staff concerned should be properly trained in the procedure. The internal auditors should ensure that the procedures are strictly adhered to.
When contacted, assistant police commissioner Sangramsinh Nishandar said, "In many cases, close relatives of the bank customers or bank employees are involved in such incidents."

Cotton atleast is not eaten in human body. But brinjal is.
The comments of Mr Thomas are highly irresponsible and childish. He is over enthusiastic about his support to MNCs.That is where the issue pinches.Country like India are test labs for all kinds of drugs, pesticides, food items and now bio technology products.Comparing Bt Brinjal with computers is shocking.Even computers have many negative effects.Food items or drugs once enter body cannot leave easily. The damage may be slow or fast and devastating. Many times it is irreversible like organ damage or cancer or genetic changes in body. When any organic matter is engineered its natural process and structure created by nature is changed. Our immune system may react. Most of vegetables you notice toady are feeling like having plastic skin and difficult to chew and eat. This includes tomatoes and green chilly. How it (Bt) will be accepted by living organism like human body needs long term tests and various aspects. It is toxin after all introduced into plant.I cant understand arrogance and insistence of Sharad Pawar to rush through approval blaming NGOs for anti MNC movement.MNCs any way are not angels and have come to India for social service and welfare.Their sole objective is to mint money and more of it. Mahyco is a collaborated company and is in grip of Monsanto. How decisions can be influenced in India, every one knows. We dont trust politicians much anyway.Mr Sharad Pawar should cool the matter and reconsider the whole issue including sharply contrasting reports of harmful effect of Bt on human organs and digestion processes. Why he is in hurry? People of India must protest about introducing Bt Brinjal.Bt Cotton story is not very encouraging in India so far. Both NDA and now congress I are towing lines of MNCs in west and blind capitalism destroying balance and stability in economy and damaging Indian culture. The result is for all to see.Skewed incomes, high food prices, excessive property rates in India out of proportion to per capita GDP and so on.Still these politicians and babu dont want to see reality and are madly after pseudo capitalism and fraudulent liberalisation. Too fast is also too much to digest. We should practice socialist capitalism and moderate growth with regulations in key sectors like health care ,education, real estate and food items and drugs.WE should have low tax regime and disincentives for accumulating black money.Manmohan Singh could not achieve any so far in his 6 years term.He has been a failure with his team and injurious to national health. It is time to wind up Man Mohan Cabinet. How much more people want to wait and tolerate.

Friends,
Many critics of RTI say that it is being largely used by Government employees in their personal matters. It is my personal experience that it haws become necessary,in view of unreasonable, inequitable and unjust stand taken by the Government in several issues.
I have my grievance regarding restoration of pension, as evident from the appeal placed below. I have used RTI Act to get copy of file noting and other records, which show blatant non-application of mind. The records given by CPIO were incomplete and therefore I am in appeal.
In my humble opinion, this is a very good use of RTI Act, to reveal the infirmity in decision-making- process. If the Government was just and reasonable, use of RTI by aggrieved persons would not have been necessary.

Right now, 1 in 6 people around the world don't have enough to eat. That number is skyrocketing, up 20 percent since 2005.
Ending world hunger is not impossible. The community of nations just need to:
* Create and fund long-term hunger eradication plans -- and agree to have these plans monitored by the UN and civil society to ensure transparency.
* Make good on their existing funding commitments.
* Invest in sustainable agriculture and focus their funding on the small holder and women farmers who make up more than 60% of the world's hungry people.
The G8 took a step in July and pledged $22 billion in new funding to combat hunger. But they still haven't followed through on that commitment.
We've seen politicians back down on their promises before. But we've also seen the power of grassroots mobilization to change the course of history. And with more than 1 billion already going hungry, there's no time to waste. I, therefore, told President Obama to lead the charge and hold his fellow G8 leaders accountable and keep their promises to end world hunger as in letter placed below:
"Dear President Obama,
The global food system is too big to fail. Every day, nearly 16,000 children die from hunger related causes. We have the power to save those children. Already, there is more than enough food in the world to feed the 1/6 of our population that is hungry. We just need our world leaders to respect their pledges and commit to a global hunger eradication plan.
While I applaud your commitment of new U.S. funding for hunger eradication efforts, you need to lead the G8 to:
- Create and fund long-term hunger eradication plans -- and agree to have these plans monitored by the UN and civil society to ensure transparency.- Make good on their existing funding commitments.
- Invest in sustainable agriculture and focus their funding on the small holder and women farmers who make up more than 60% of the world's hungry people
With more than 1 billion people already going hungry, there's no time to waste. We cannot afford to lose such precious lives by failing to act.
I have joined ActionAid in calling for a world free from hunger. I want you to make this a reality.

It is apparent that the judicial system (like every other system of this mango republiuc) needs to be completely overhauled to make it responsive to the citizen and the needs of a democracy. The judicial system needs special attention, because it is the final upholder of the constitution and democracy. To begin with, the selection process of the judges needss to be at least as rigrous as that of the IITs and IIMs. Only the most promising should be allowed. Then, we need to have system for psychological profiling of the judeges to ensure there are no pshycopaths, liars, weak kneed, non-independent, corrupt, morally and intectual feather weights. We need to train the judges that they are not master of the fate of individuals, but a servant of the laws, that is to say, where a law exists, they need to implement it to the letter and spirit, and keep in abayance their personal likes and dislikes. We need a system that rigrously scrutinises their performance / judgements vis-a-vis the laws of the land on a regular and sustained basis. And, finally, we need in place a system that ruthlessly boots the bad apples and rewards only those proven to deserve promotion.
I, however, differ with the view that we do not need more judges / courts. Anyone who has visited the lower courts, the consumer courts (even amazingly the National Commission), the high courts will easily be able to associate these "courts" with conditions prevailing in fish markets. It is shocking that these "courts" routinely have 20, 30, 40 even 50 matters listed for "hearing" evryday, with a maximum average allocatble time for "conducting" their hearings of maybe 3-5 minutes. There is simply no way that a judge, any judge no matter how brilliant, can deliver quality justice in 3 or 4 minutes. Even at the intoductory stage, many cases involve deep issues of law and fact that need to be properly read, understood and discussed before any fair and reasonable order can be passed by a judge. Compare the judicail proceeds of the civilised nations we get to see on various Tv programms. The judicial envoirnment is clean, peaceful and uncluttered. The hearings are patient and thorough. The judge is a no-nonsense task master. And what do we have here?!!! Since "independence" our population has increased 5 fold. So the number of judges should have gone up by a factor of 5, just to keep pace. If one allows for the many additional laws and the increased pace and complexity of modern life, the number of judges / courts should be at least 10, 20??? times more.
It does appear that Mr. Moily is not upto the job. He is too slow .... well behind the curve, when the country is facing the death thores and requires energetic and radical surgery and overhaul. His peacemeal approach, as in amending the laws and proccedures involving sex-related crimes, discloses lack of intellectual / comprehension capacity. Band-aids will not solve the disease.
But, somehow I am not at all hopeful. Our condition requires statesmen and stalwarts. What we have is pygmies.

Are our MLAs sick? Medical bills Rs 5 crore
RTI Reply: Govt Has No Info On Their Diseases
N D Shiva Kumar | TNN
Bangalore: Our elected representatives are quick to point out how low their salaries are. But what’s not disclosed is the hidden perks they enjoy.
For example, in a society where universal healthcare is a distant dream, MLAs receive life-time free medical aid from the government for their families and themselves even if they make it to the Vidhana Soudha just once.
When the figure is totted up, it works out to a hefty sum: Rs 5.2 crore, for example, between January
2007 and October 2009 in Karnataka. An MLA has availed of Rs 17.68 lakh from the government as medical reimbursement in just 10 months! The best part is the government has no clue about the disease he is suffering from.
Ashok Mahadevappa Pattan (P M Ashok), a Congress MLA from Ramdurg in Belgaum district, is the man who has received this sum after submitting bills.
In 2009, from January to October, except three months — January, May and September — he has got reimbursements from the government. The highest was in February, when he got Rs 5,83,710.
While taking the reimbursements, in some months’ bill, his name figures as Ashok Mahadevappa Pattan and in others, it is simply P M Ashok. His monthly reimbursements are: Feb - Rs 5,83,710 ; March - Rs 64,155; April - Rs 2,81,895; June - Rs 2,74,830; July - Rs 1,46,876; Aug - Rs 1,41410; Oct - Rs 2,75,232. The government has revealed these details to an RTI application filed by the TOI. However, Ashok is not alone. There are several instances where the government has given lakhs as medical reimbursement to sitting and former MLAs.
For instance, in January 2007, Doddanna Gowda Patil got Rs 4.01 lakh, while Vatal Nagaraj Rs 4.55 lakh. In September, M T Krishnappa
has taken Rs 4.98 lakh. In June 2009, Eeshanna Gulgannavar has received Rs 5.47 lakh.
If a person is elected as MLA once, then the government takes care of the medical expenditure of the member and his/her family till they die. The facility applies even after they retire and are never get elected again. However, strangely, the government has no details about the diseases the members are suffering from for which reimbursements are claimed. The reimbursements are done on producing the bills in a prescribed format
